Mississippi’s unclaimed money totals are a mystery. We have yet to find an article or section of the state website outlining the unclaimed money and property totals for the state. Treasurer Lynn Fitch does boast about the total she has returned since taking office in 2012, which is over $95 million.
Unclaimed Money Searching in Mississippi
Mississippi’s unclaimed property website offers a searchable database that shows you the claim ID, name, address and whether the claim is more or less than $100. There is no way to claim online on the site, you must first download this form. Be sure to add the property ID and fill out the form carefully. Then you must have the form notarized and mail it to the treasurer’s office. Processing time on a claim can take up to 8 weeks.
The state does share their database with MissingMoney.com, which is a searchable database for most states in the US. This site will allow you to enter some information online, but ultimately you still must print, notarize, and mail the form to the treasurer’s office.
On the claim form it does indicate what supporting documents you will need in order to claim the property. This includes if you are claiming for yourself, if you are claiming for a deceased relative, or if you are claiming for a business.
